On March 10th, 2017, by a vote of 3627 to 2762, the students of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign rejected a campus-wide referendum calling for divestment from select Israeli companies and companies that do business with Israel.

The referendum was placed on the ballot by the UIUC chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. The proposed text used vague language in an attempt to mask the true political agenda of the referendum as a human rights initiative. This effort was part of the international “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions” (BDS) movement which seeks to demonize and delegitimize the Jewish State.

Pro-Israel students and allies at Illinois united and ran a successful month-long campaign to defeat divestment. Over 100 individual students participated, volunteering their time in a variety of ways for the cause. The referendum was defeated through the great strength of the pro-Israel community at UIUC.

We thank all of our amazing partners who helped bring this victory.

Our community must now build off of this success to make our campus even-more supportive of Israel; and a safer, better place for all students.

Am Israel Chai! (translation: “the nation of Israel lives!”)
